Made with whiskey, bitters, sugar & a citrus twist, absolutely everyone should know how to make an Old Fashioned. It's also a great place to start, if you're not yet sold on whiskey. The secret to its popularity lies in its simplicity and the ability to highlight the quality of its ingredients.
You will need:
- 2 oz (60ml) whiskey - a good quality bourbon or rye whiskey works well
- 1 sugar cube (or 1/2 tsp loose sugar)
- Few dashes Angostura bitters
- A couple of dashes plain water
- Ice cubes
- Orange twist, for garnish
- Maraschino cherry, for garnish (optional)
To make:
- Prepare your glass - Begin by placing a sugar cube in an Old Fashioned or Rocks glass. If you're using loose sugar, aim for about half a teaspoon.
- Muddle the base - Saturate the sugar with a few dashes of Angostura bitters. Add a dash of plain water to help dissolve the sugar. Muddle these ingredients together until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
- Add whiskey - Pour in 2 oz (60ml) of your preferred whiskey.
- Ice ice baby - Add a handful of ice cubes to your glass, enough to chill the liquid but not enough to dilute.
- Gently stir - Stir the mix gently for about 30 seconds.
- Garnish - Express the oil of an orange peel over the glass, then rub it around the rim and drop it in. For another layer of flavor, add a maraschino cherry.
- Serve immediately - Your classic Old Fashioned cocktail is ready to be savored. Enjoy responsibly!
The beauty of the Old Fashioned is in the balance of sweetness, bitterness, and the warmth of the whiskey. Cheers to making good drinks at home!
